Ceramic plates are generally round in shape, with an open mouth, shallow belly, and flat bottom.
Ceramic plates are often found at Neolithic cultural sites. The vessel shapes include open-mouthed shallow-cup flat-bottomed vessels, flared-mouthed shallow-cup three-ring-footed vessels, perforated high-footed vessels, conical shallow-cup high-ring-footed vessels, and hexagonal vessels with raised edges, among others. The gray clay plate unearthed from the early stages of the Xia Dai Erliou culture has a slightly flared rim, a shallow belly, and a flat bottom. It has three triangular feet. The Xiajiadiao culture in the Northeast region includes the fake-circle-foot pottery plate.During the Western Zhou period, the original celadon porcelain plate had an open mouth, a shallow belly, and straight circular feet.During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, there were many styles of original celadon porcelain plates.
After the Eastern Han Dynasty, ceramic plates became larger in diameter and very similar in shape to the original celadon porcelain plates, and were typically used as trays for ear cups. After the Western Jin Dynasty, ceramic plates became one of the main types of tableware of the time. Depending on the needs of different uses, the styles of production continued to increase with each generation, resulting in a greater variety of shapes, including those with a sloping rim, a concave rim, an arched belly, a folded belly, and various depths of the circular base.
Later, the size and shape of the plates evolved into various forms, including open rims, curved rims, concave rims, shallow rims, rolled rims, flat rims, folded-waist styles, sunflower petal styles, lotus leaf styles, square corner styles, and flower-shaped serving plates, among others.During the Six Dynasties period, celadon porcelain plates with engraved lotus patterns were already available, and later single-color glazed plates in white, maroon, yellow, green-red, and purple appeared. There are also designs featuring printed, engraved, and scratched patterns on single-color glazes.During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Jingdezhen kilns also produced plates decorated with Doucai, Wucai, Pink-Cai, Red-Green-Cai, and Alum Red-Cai.
